In the poem, I AM, I referred to God as being gay. Someone commented: “How disrespectful! Being gay is a sin. God is not gay!”
Of all the challenging or provocative elements in the poem, I found it interesting that the only part this reader objected to was the reference to being “gay.” Reactions like that often come from discomfort or unresolved personal feelings, but for whatever reason, it’s important to remember the poem wasn’t written to single out any identity.
My purpose in writing it was to show that all aspects of existence — every form of life, every contradiction, every human experience — arise from the same Source. To me, that Source is not a distant figure in the sky, but Life itself: the creative force that animates everything, the eternal presence that continues generating new expressions long after the universe we know has changed or passed away.
The poem reminds us that the Creator is not separate from creation. The Creator is Life, and we are expressions of that Life — diverse, imperfect, evolving, and inseparably connected.
